Creating a mosaic from small pieces of coloured glass, stone or other materials is an ancient decorative art. In this workshop, led by mosaic expert Mrs Niki Lironi, visitors will learn the art and traditions of mosaics in Crete, and then use the materials and follow the instructions to create their own sample.
Arolithos is a unique private Cretan village. It is a family business, run with great passion and love for Cretan tradition. Its goal is to present Cretan tradition, the customs and habits of the region and the architecture and values of Cretan people to visitors and preserve these for future generations.
Arolithos means “a rock’s hole gathering and conserving rainwater”. The village has taken that symbolic name because it encompasses and conserves the traditional ways and rural beauty of Crete. Through its wide range of activities, visitors can escape the present and travel back to the past.
Built on the slope of a mountain, amidst the wild Cretan landscape, the village is a feast for the eyes, evoking memories from the past and images of generations past and their way of living, while revealing the simplicity and beauty of old times to younger generations.
